Khandallah Erakovic, the junior A Grade girls team, played three matches in four days to finish off a great interclub season. Sarah Ward, Grace Seemann, Krista Lazou, Lauren Eagleson and Anna Tribe gave their all to successfully finish the pre-Christmas season as champions, finishing level on points with Karori but winning the title by virtue of beating the Karori team when the two met earlier in the season. Erakovic won all 7 of their matches.

On Thursday 5th December, Khandallah Erakovic endured the unusually humid Wellington weather to beat the Talavera Tornadoes 6 matches to 0. Particular acknowledgement goes to Krista, who battled through a headache to win 4-1, 4-0.

Khandallah Erakovic were back on the courts on Saturday 7th December despite a ‘marginal’ weather forecast. They beat Churton Park Pink by 4 matches to 2, with Anna winning her singles in a super-tie-break and Grace just losing out in her singles, which also went to a super-tie-break. Krista and Lauren won their matches convincingly– each losing only one game respectively in their singles and two in their doubles. Anna and Grace, as usual, had everyone waiting for them to finish and lost their doubles agonisingly in a super-tie-break: 14-16.

Conditions were a bit of a joke for the team’s final match on Sunday 8th December. The wind had tennis balls swerving in mid-air, water bottles rolling across courts, caps flying off and made serving a very tricky business. Joining Khandallah Erakovic in the blustery weather were Miramar Avengers. Khandallah eventually triumphed: 4 matches to 2, to complete their unbeaten season. Reflecting some very competitive matches during the season Anna and Grace nearly pulled off the comeback of all comebacks in the no 1 doubles, recovering from 4-1 3-0 down to take the second set on a tie-break but then unfortunately losing the super tie-break 11-9. Fortunately that one point dropped didn’t prove to be crucial.

With a total of 45 points, Khandallah Erakovic finished equal top of the A Grade table along with Karori United Erakovic. Erakovic must be a good team name to have! Finally, the team would like to thank Julie Ward for being such an encouraging and efficient manager.
